This offer has been around for a while, but I just found out about it as I was mapping out my elite qualifying strategy for the end of the year.
Stay 3 nights at any Starwood Property by December 9 and get an additional 3,000 Aeroplan miles on top of your normal Starpoints. Stay 5 nights and get 5,000 Aeroplan miles. If you happen to have 3 of those stays in Canada, then you can pick up an additional 3,000 bonus miles! So if you have 3 Starwood Stays in Canada and 2 elsewhere then you can end up with 8,000 Bonus Aeroplan miles on top of the SPG points you earn.
8,000 Aeroplan Miles may not be much by itself, but since they are a transfer partner of Amex Membership Rewards you can transfer over points you got from the 50,000 bonus on the Amex Business Gold Rewards card to get enough for a free ticket. They do charge fuel surcharges now though so you will probably only want to use the miles for premium cabin travel to make it worthwhile.
It is now possible to sign up for the 4Q 2012 SPG promotion which is called “Better by the Night”. This isn’t the best promotion in the world, but free extra points are free extra points. It is for stays from October 1, 2012 to December 20, 2012. This promotion gives you double SPG points on stays of 1-2 nights and triple SPG points on stays of 3 or more nights. They also have a booking bonus of 250 points if booked on SPG.com and 500 points if booked using the iPhone app.
This is another of those situations where you should just sign up now so you don’t forget about it and it only takes a few seconds. Click here to sign up!
Update 9/5/12: This promotion is now over and the SPG cards are back to their usual 25K sign up bonus.
Twice a year Amex runs a promotion where you can get 30,000 Starwood Preferred Guest points instead of the usual 25,000 points. This is really as good as it gets for these cards and this offer is only for the next month until September 3 and then it goes back to the usual amount. This applies for both the SPG Amex and the SPG Business Amex. When I first started, I didn’t have this card, but I do now and anyone who is into points and miles usually has this card in their arsenal. I’ll show you in a minute how the sign up bonus alone saved me over $1,500 on rooms in both Detroit and Santiago, Chile. The details:
10,000 SPG points after the first purchase
20,000 SPG points after spending $5,000 in the card in the first 6 months
No fee for the first year, then $65
Instant Preferred Plus status which can give you free room upgrades, 4 PM Checkout and more
5 nights or 2 stays worth of credit towards your gold or platinum status qualification.
Up to 5 points per $ spent at SPG properties (2 starpoints per dollar spent on the card plus the starpoints you get as a SPG member), 1 point per $ everywhere else
SPG Points are some of the most valuable because of their flexibility. The best use of them most of the time is obviously at SPG properties such as Westin, Sheraton, W, St. Regis, Le Meridien and others. Some really nice luxury hotel brands! But they also offer the ability to transfer your points to several airlines and they give you a bonus of 5000 miles whenever you transfer 20,000 points to an airline program.
I recently got the SPG Business Amex back in November which was the last time they offered the 30,000 point bonus. Here is how I used some of my sign up bonus points to save me a bunch on hotel rooms:
The first example was when I went on my Machu Picchu / Easter Island / Santiago trip in April. I stayed in a hostel on Easter Island but decided to use some SPG points in Santiago at the Sheraton using their Cash+Points option. The nightly rate was $270 on the dates I was there and I was staying 3 nights. But the cash and points option was available for $45+2800 points. This gave me an incredible redemption value per night of over 8 cents per point ($270 – $45) /2800. If I used the whole signup bonus like that, it would be worth $2410 in hotel rooms, wow!
Another example is when I planned a last minute trip to a music festival called DEMF in Detroit over Memorial Day. I had stayed at the Westin in previous years and it is a great property as well as being close to all the action of the festival. But since I was planning it last minute, the rates were through the roof at $393 a night! But if there are normal rooms available you can get an award night using points. Cash and points were only available for the first night, again at $45+2800 points for a whopping savings of $348 and a value per point of 12 cents per point. The other two nights of my stay I used the 7000 point option to have the room completely covered. Since the room would have cost $393 if I paid for this, this gives a value of 5.6 center per points which is still pretty great! And to top it all off, due to my Preferred Plus status due to having this card, they upgraded me to a corner suite for free!
Between these two examples I redeemed 18,200 points and it saved me $1809 in room costs. And I haven’t even used all of my bonus yet! Are you starting to see why people get excited about this card and bonus? If you are feeling saucy you can apply for both cards at once (for a huge 60,000 points) or you can do I like I did and tackle one at a time. Click here for the SPG Amex and here for the SPG Business Amex. As always, feel free to comment below with any questions and I will try to answer them for you!

Starwood Preferred Guest
You had to register for their current “Nice Choice” promo by June 30, so not going to cover it since it is too late, but I took the get 500 additional Starpoints for each paid Sheraton booking. I am trying to get to Platinum Status with SPG this year so I might take advantage of this offer with a cheap Sheraton stay on some trips if I don’t use cash and points.
One Cat 1-4 hotel night certificate for every two stays, but you had to register by June 30.
Well, the points I talked about in my previous post about Sears and SouthWest Rewards have posted and things turned out great. Sears security took a little long to verify my second gift card purchase so I wasn’t able to get quite as many points as projected, and ended up with some Ultimate Reward points instead of all SouthWest points. When it all was completed I ended up with 189,000 Southwest points, a Southwest Companion Pass and 25,000 Ultimate Reward points from my purchases along with over a million ShopYourWayRewards points since this promo happened to fall during my birthday month (lucky me!) and I am a platinum VIP member.
I used 760,000 points worth ($760) to purchase two more Samsung Galaxy 2 tablets for resale which I combined with a Memorial Day coupon code I had gotten on a receipt for a pack of gum that gave a 25% SYWR points rebate for 2 days only. This gave me back 182,000 more ShopYourWayRewards points which I will use on a future purchase.
I also received 5,000 SPG points, 4,000 Avios, and will get an extra 10,000 Avios when the promotion I mentioned in the other article closes on July 31st. Not too bad for sitting at home clicking buttons!
Starwood Preferred Guest is one of the top hotel programs in my opinion due to the ease of getting status, the quality of the properties, and exceptional value for points when utilizing their Cash + Points award option. As such, SPG points are very valuable to me and most other point connoisseurs. And I love getting free points, especially when it is so easy. Like the title says, you can get 100 SPG points simply for liking them on Facebook. There is also a chance to win 100,000 SPG points and you might get lucky! So click here and hit the like button then enter your SPG details and submit. You probably can unlike them after the points show up, but it doesn’t look like they spam too much and most of the stuff they post about that will show up in your feed are promos that you might want to know about anyways. Enjoy!
Starwood Preferred Guest has announced their latest promotion and while it isn’t anything as good as they have had in the past, it is free points compared to what you would normally get so it is welcome in my book. From the email I got:
