When a hotel chain announces category changes, it is rarely good news because it seems like most of the time more go up in category and down. This is definitely the case with latest Starwood announcement where about 50 hotels go down in category and over 200 go up. Here is a listing of all the changes.

The only one that might impact me directly is the Westin Cadillac in Detroit where I normally stay is going from a category 4 to a category 5. These changes take effect on March 5, so make sure to make any reservations before then. Keep in mind that most of the points and points+cash reservations are fully refundable with no penalty up until the day of or the day before arrival so there isn’t any reason to wait if you have a potential reservation in the future.
