Make money AND UR miles with OfficeMax and Chase Ink

Through Saturday, August 29, Officemax is having an unadvertised special where you get a $15 rebate when you buy $300 worth of Visa gift cards.  I made a whopping 24,000 miles during a promotion just like this one around Christmas by driving around to different OM stores.  By buying 3X$200 gift cards you will get an instant $30 discount off the total automatically.  The gift cards each have a $6.95 fee so your total for all $600 in gift cards will just be $590.85 [(3X$206.95) – $30]!  This means you are getting $10 for free!IMG_7426

Hello, free lunch!

But wait… There’s more!  If you use a normal miles earning credit card you will score 591 miles or points, but if you use the Chase Ink Plus card (which gives you 5X points on Office Supply stores like OM) you will take home almost 3,000 of the ultra valuable Ultimate Rewards points.

You can usually do this once per day at every OfficeMax in your local area (if they aren’t sold out of course).  Note this works for the $200 and $100 gift cards but the $200 are a better value since the fee is approximately the same.  Keep in mind that even though they are merged, this promotion is only at OfficeMax stores not Office Depots.  You can also call before you go to make sure they have the $200 Visa’s in stock so you don’t waste a trip.

Make money and miles… Does it get any better?

How I am flying to Chicago for just $11 and 5800 points!

This is another post in the How I am Series of articles that show you the nuts and bolts of how I play the free travel game.Chicago Bean Link

They say luck is when preparation meets opportunity and I am a very lucky guy.  When I saw that my friend and Incorrect Records label boss Anthony Attalla was spinning at a birthday party at Spybar in Chicago in May, I was on the lookout for a deal on award tickets.  I just scored round trip airfare for just $11 and 5800 Southwest points which is a steal! I’m going to do this one a bit differently and break this deal down backwards. Continue reading “How I am flying to Chicago for just $11 and 5800 points!”

It’s First Friday! 3X Points on Restaurants and Bars for Chase Sapphire Preferred cards.

First Friday is one of those things I have been wanting to write about but kept missing.  Well today I will check it off my list.  People who follow this blog know that I love my Chase Sapphire Preferred card.  The 2X miles on Travel and Restaurant expenses really adds up for me since that is so much of what I spend.ChaseSapphirePreferred

Well today they are giving you an extra bonus point on the Restaurant category (which normally includes bars and clubs too) for a total of 3 points for ever dollar!  So go out to happy hour if needed and offer to pick up the check!  Or do the old “I’ll put it all on my credit card and take the cash” trick.  That way you can get triple miles on the total amount of the bill that will help you get closer to your next free trip!

You don’t have to do anything special, the bonus is applied automatically today so enjoy the extra points!

While you are at it, why not double dip at one of the locations where you can get Miles For Meals for an extra 5 miles per dollar spent!

Get 24,000 Free Ultimate Rewards Points from OfficeMax!

Edit: This deal actually goes until December 27th so you can get 50,000 miles or more!

Edit 2: I found out today you can do 3X$200 to maximize the discount with $40 off. I have updated the review to reflect this.

I love OfficeMax!  They give me free money and miles all the time like when they gave me 1000 points a day and when they gave me 43,000 Ultimate Rewards points in just one week! This time it is 24,000 free points but it is possible to get even more!

What you need?

  1. A miles or points earning credit or debit card. Any card will work for this deal but the Ink Plus, Ink Cash or Amex Simplycash cards are ideal with their 5X points on Office Supply stores
  2. A Bluebird card (you can get for free at Walmart)
  3. A little free time to stop by OfficeMax every day and then Walmart at the end of the week.

US Airways Bumps Bonus to 50,000!

The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® has always been one of our favorites for people to get started and it just got even better!  They have just bumped the US Airways 50Kbonus from 40,000 miles with your first purchase to 50,000 with your first purchase.  This means you can get this card, spend $1 on gas and then earn enough for two round trip flights anywhere in the US!  You do have to pay the $89 annual fee with this offer, but I would trade $89 for two round trip flights every day of the week.

This is really as easy as it comes for bonus miles.  Apply for the card, spend $1, get 50,000 miles!

Some other ways you could use these miles are for a ticket to Hawaii (40K miles), Off Peak to Europe in the winter (30K miles) or you could save up the miles and add some to it and get Business Class to Asia via Europe for 110K miles like I did when I went to Germany and China!

How you spend the miles is up to you, but the important thing is getting them while you can!  As you may know US Airways and American Airlines have partially merged and this card will probably be going away once the merger is completed (or at least rebranded to an AA card).

Some other benefits of this card are first checked bag free on US Airways operated flights, priority boarding, and one companion certificate per year.  If this sounds like something you are interested in (and it should) then click here to apply now.

Amex and Bluebird users! Don’t miss Small Business Saturday November 29

Small Business Saturday 2Every year around this time American Express has a promotion called Small Business Saturday where in an effort to support local small businesses they give away free money!  This year’s offer is a bit different than the last time I participated in 2012, but it is possibly even better than ever! IHG Pointbreaks are back for stays through 2/28/15!

IHG Pointbreaks are one of the best values in hotel awards at only 5,000 points a night.  I love this program and was able to stay 15 nights free on my recent China trip using Pointbreaks rooms at amazing hotels like this Intercontinental in Hangzhou.intercontinental Hangzhou

IHG just announced which hotels are on the latest list which will become bookable Monday, November 24 at around 8:30 AM EST.  It isn’t a bad list and I picked a few of the properties to highlight here that looked nice to me.  Any of these are available for just 5,000 points a night and if you want to know how to book them read this article we wrote about how to book an IHG Pointbreaks room. But act fast!  The good properties such as the Intercontinental and Crowne Plaza hotels sell out of 5000 point rooms within a few hours usually. Amex Sync Offer: Free $150 for your AT&T Wireless Bill

Whenever the annual fees come due on my cards (such as the $65 annual fee for my Starwood Preferred Guest Business American Express), I look and see what value I have gotten for the card throughout the membership year and compare it to the fee.  I love Amex Sync offers and have written about them many times in the past.  The latest Amex offer though is a doozy! This one offer will pay almost 3 years worth of annual fees on this card! To take advantage of this offer you will obviously need an American Express card that has this offer available in your online account (my SPG Business Amex did).
